CANVAS CARE

Rhino Tuff FR 12oz Canvas is a medium weight fire retardant, waterproof canvas fabric. It is a high performance versatile polycotton fabric. The canvas fabric it is treated with superior impregnation treatment that locks in the waterproofing, water repellent, anti-rot and mildew properties, making your canvas mould resistant not mould proof, so you will need to care for your canvas.

CANVAS MAINTENANCE

  1. Thoroughly Wet and Dry New Canvas New canvas may benefit from being thoroughly wetted and allowed to dry before its first use enhancing its water repellent and durability.
  2. Cleaning Process: To clean the canvas, use a soft brush and cold water only. Gently brush away any dirt, debris, or stains.
  3. Avoid Harsh Chemicals: These substances can cause damage to the fabric and reduce its protective properties.
  4. Promptly Remove Contaminants: Do not allow bird droppings, earth, sand, or vegetable matter to remain in contact with the fabric these can cause staining
  5. Mildew Spot Treatment: If mildew spots appear, brush them off before they become attached to the fabric.
  6. Reproofing: Canvas that has been cleaned extensively may require reproofing. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

MOULD OR STUBBORN STAINS

We recommend Paskal mould and mildew remover as it works very well and is readily available. For cleaning of mildew, roof run-off or other similar stains.

  • Sweep all leaves, dirt and other debris off the surface for maximum penetration of the active ingredients.
  • Dilute 1:5 parts water in a backpack sprayer.
  • Saturate the affected area. Do not hose off.
  • Apply during overcast, dry conditions to avoid accelerated evaporation. Ensure there is no forecast Rain
  • Lichen requires a second application within 15 minutes of the first. If badly Contaminated, apply again in 1 month.
  • Algae will disappear in days, moss will turn brown and decompose in a few weeks. Black Mould can take 4-6 months, or 6-12 months if heavily contaminated.
  • Products – Moss & Mould Remover, Proofcoat – Canvas Re-Proofing

CANVAS SHRINKAGE

Canvas by nature shrinks can shrink up to 3% maximum, generally, after it first gets wet however can start to shrink either after or before install, depending on humidity and storage conditions as a result of the moisture in the air, and the conditions at the time of storage and installation. The first time your Eco Tent gets wet it may leak a little, do not worry, this is normal. Once it dries out for the first time that shrinking process
closes up any little holes

Why is this important?

This is important as we designed the Eco Tent canvas to be firm and not to loose which rapidly reduces noise on windy days and nights but if the canvas shrinks too much and the canvas becomes too tight it will place strain on the window mesh but more importantly the zips. If the door or window panel becomes too tight the zips will become hard to close and ultimately bust the zips

How is it fixed?

We have designed our panels to allow for this shrinkage, although in the case that the canvas shrinks the full 3%, we can simply reduce the tightness by removing a couple of tek screws, bringing the canvas in 5-10mm as required.

ZIPS

Our Tents are made with quality zippers. To prolong zipper life, do not “grind” the zippers around corners. If needed pull the canvas, windows or doors to help zippers glide smoothly. Keep them clean from dirt. Also lubricate the zips from time to time with Mr. Sheen.

In some instances the canvas is too tight and may cause zips to burst. Easing the tension on the canvas panels can ensure longevity of the zips. Remove the canvas hide (Velcro canvas cover hiding the rope track and tek screws), once the cover is removed unscrew all tek screws on the column and move the rope track in 5 – 10mm as required. Example detail below is for a 4.2m Tent wall, the rope track centers are 4100 apart (100mm less than the tent size chosen), moving one side in 10mm you will be 4090 apart, then repeat on the other side making the new distance of the rope track centers 4080. This 20mm should be enough to take the tension off the zips.

Should the tension be vertical, repeat the process on top and bottom rope tracks.

STEEL WORK AND FIXINGS

We recommend structural nuts/bolts should be visually inspected at least annually or after strong wind events or storms.

A visual inspection and general cleaning of the steelwork by washing with potable water and mild detergents to remove salts and other deleterious contaminants be conducted at least annually. Any signs of corrosion or deterioration of the steelwork and fasteners shall be repaired according to the recommendations of as/nzs 2312-2014 or other applicable standards.

All damaged galvanising shall be repaired by the application of a ‘zinc rich’ paint applied to 150 microns dry film thickness.

PVC CARE

Our 900 GSM PVC Coated Membrane is a strong, flexible, and affordable material ideal for our Eco Structures. It features fire resistance, water repellent and anti-fungal properties.

PVC MAINTENANCE

Cleaning Process: To clean the PVC, use a soft brush and cold water only. Gently brush away any dirt, debris, or stains.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: These substances can cause damage to the fabric and reduce its protective properties.

Promptly Remove Contaminants: Do not allow bird droppings, earth, sand, or vegetable matter to remain in contact with the fabric these can cause staining.

Mildew Spot Treatment: If mildew spots appear, brush them off before they become attached to the fabric.

MOULD OR STUBBORN STAINS

PVC RE-TENSIONING

We recommend re-tensioning Roof Fly’s within 3 months of installation as the product would have had time to relax and settle.

If you do not have the High Wind Upgrade Stainless Steel Plates on your PVC Roof Fly, you will have Stainless D Rings. It is essential that these are also visually inspected after any strong wind event/storm as the wind vibrations can cause the D Ring to spin around, crushing/pinching the webbing & eventually will
cause failure.

CYCLONE PREP

Eco Structures Engineering requires remove the external fly sheet from the top of the tents.

Use an impact driver and socket to rattle loose the 8 hooks holding the fly in place. Pull the fly to the ground and take care as it will be heavy and cumbersome. Fold the fly sheet and store it in a safe place until the event has passed, if you have a bathpod, store it in there for extra weight.

From an asset protection perspective, remove all furniture from the tent. Store in a cool dry place, you may use the bathpod if you have one. While the canvas walls to the tent and the ceiling canvas can withstand higher wind speeds, they are not warranted for winds above 32m/s. The biggest risk to canvas panels is they will not withstand damage from airborne debris, falling trees etc. Replacement of these items is a relatively low cost if they are damaged.

Isolate Power – No need to isolate water particularly, but you may do so if you wish.

Tent Wind Speeds

Roof Fabric Components should be removed from the tent structure when wind speeds are forecast to exceed 32 m/s.

* Fabric products that are subjected to wind speeds exceeding 32 m/s will not be warranted by Eco Structures Australia and should be thoroughly checked for fatigue before continued use.
